Earth Day with a Toddler!

Happy Earth day! Last year we didn't do much to celebrate. Beans was just a bit too little to grasp the concept of planets or recycling. But this year the time seemed right! As always, I broke out the unit study tote and set up our educational corner in the dining room to reflect our theme. We spent about 2 weeks reading books on the planet earth, earth activists, climate change, and how to take care of our home. Beans enjoyed it a lot, since she already loves learning about space. She became very concerned about "yuckies going up to the sky". So, here are some of our activities!
Here's our earth sensory rice bin. Pretty standard blue and green rice, but after she got bored of playing with it, I added some pieces of trash and had her sort them into her Green Toys recycling truck. She really got into that!
Here is a great dollar tree find! Sticker sorting recyclables and compost. We got a lot of use out of this activity.
Earth suncatchers, with contact paper and tissue paper. I think it turned out so beautiful.
Here's our collection of earth day books. Some of them we will keep out, others will go back in the tote. The Little People, Big Dreams books stay out and Beans loves Greta and the Giants, so we will keep them on the shelves for sure!
And here's our little education corner. I will make a post going more in depth on what's over here, but for now I wanted to show how cute this display turned out! I'm getting pretty good at my chalk board drawings! Some other things we did were:

 - Coloring a coffee filter with blue and green maker and then spraying it with a spray bottle of water. Makes a really pretty tye dye effect.
-Sorting world animals on a felt map
-A collage made of pieces of paper cut from magazines
 -Painting with earth colors

I hope this post gives you some ideas on how to spend earth day with a toddler! Thank you for reading :) -Danielle J
